Boca Grande, otherwise known as Gasparilla, is a small island sitting north of Sanibel. About halfway between Tampa and Ft. Myers, it spans roughly seven miles with beaches running along the entire gulf side. Home to mangrove trees, a quaint downtown, and a well maintained bike path, it advertises all that makes Florida worth visiting.

It is, however, its restaurants that prove most impressive. With a name that’s translated to mean Big Mouth, you should bring just that, along with an empty stomach when heading to the island. Despite its small size, it is chock full of dining establishments, for all ages and all times of day.

Casual

South Beach

Located near the southern tip of the island, South Beach’s menu has something for everyone: salads for the health nuts, any and all fried seafood for the grease-inclined, burgers and ribs for the meat lovers, and unique daily specials for a splash of class.  The crab cake is a signature and the coconut shrimp a popular appetizer. All of its fare is affordable and tasty accompanied by an ambiance that can’t be beat, particularly around sunset.

Location: 760 Gulf Blvd, South End of Island

Hours of Operation: Daily 11:30am-9:30pm

Loose Caboose

A former train depot, the Loose Caboose is a top lunch spot on the island. Smack dab in the middle of town, it offers a massive menu, along with ample indoor and outdoor seating. The Boca Grande wrap is a favorite (if you like grouper), along with the cobb salad (consider adding shrimp). All lunch items can be ordered to go, giving you the freedom to enjoy this tasty fare whilst exploring the island. The joint also serves dinner (seasonally), with items ranging from tacos to crepes.

Location: 433 West 4th Street, downtown

Hours of Operation: Daily 11:00am-4:30pm

Miller’s Dockside

A typical seafood-based menu, the tuna nachos are highly recommended, along with the seafood platter. Newly remodeled, there is less indoor seating but you can always find a spot at the bar. But rest assured, the outdoor tables at Miller’s still have access to televisions for those interested in watching sports; and screens can be dropped down if/when it becomes buggy or muggy. Keep an eye out for manatees while dining, as they frequent the marina.

Location: 220 Harbor Dr., at Boca Grande Marina

Hours of Operation: Daily 11:30am-9:00pm

Sisters Restaurant

A great spot for Italian, particularly when it comes to take out. Open for lunch Monday-Saturday and dinner every day, you can’t go wrong with any of their six pizzas. A laundry list of toppings are available and, for those hoping to avoid wheat, Sisters offers a gluten-free crust option for its smallest (10 inch) size.  The shrimp scampi is a must-try pasta dish, along with the piccata and seafood marinara.

Location: 480 E Railroad Ave

Hours of Operation: Monday – Saturday 11:00am-9:00pm, Sunday 4:00pm-9:00pm (dinner only)

The Temptation

One of the oldest restaurants on the island, along with the Gasparilla Inn, The Temp is the embodiment of the old Florida. As much a visual as a gastronomical experience, its walls are lined with murals depicting island life. An order of grouper fingers is almost a requirement and its crab remoulade is perfect for those who love rich, cheesy dishes. When making a reservation, ask to sit in the Caribbean Room. It’s smaller but filled with fun artwork.

Location: 350 Park Ave, downtown

Hours of Operation: Monday – Saturday, 10:00am- Midnight

Fancy-ish

Eagle Grille

Located just above Miller’s Dockside, the restaurant has the same menu but a totally different vibe. Its nautical decor, dark wood and carpet make it feel far fancier. The views from here are great, as diners can look down over the entire marina. Plus, at Eagle Grille you can make reservations, so it’s ideal for larger parties or events.

Location: 220 Harbor Dr., at Boca Grande Marina

Hours of Operation:  Summer hours

Third Street Cafe

Formerly Loons on a Limb, Third Street Cafe provides, “upscale dining in a laid back setting.” It’s menu boasts a wide variety of both seafood and meat, be it fried, grilled or blackened. And you can’t go wrong with either the roasted beet and goat cheese salad or burger. With indoor and outdoor seating, this cafe is perfect for all seasons and in any weather. Third Street also offers brunch on weekends. Be sure to stop in for a killer Bloody Mary and eggs Benedict.

Hours of Operation:  Tuesday – Friday 6:00pm-9:00pm, Saturday – Sunday 8:30am-2:30pm for brunch, 6:00pm-9:00pm for dinner

Scarpa’s Coastal

In the same space that used to house PJ’s Seagrille (one of my favorites that sadly is no more), Scarpa’s cooks up an endless amount of delicious Italian food. The bruschetta is a must, along with the seafood fettuccine, served with olive oil, marinara or alfredo sauce. You’ll also find a large fish tank filled with colorful creatures, a great distraction for kids during family dinner. Scarpa’s boasts a comprehensive breakfast menu too, which includes avocado toast and shrimp & grits just to name a few.

Location: 321 Park Avenue

Hours: Monday – Wednesday 5:00 – 9:00 pm, Thursday – Sunday 7:30-11:30am and 5:00-9:00pm (10pm Fri/Sat)

Fancy-ist

Gasparilla Inn

Entering the Inn’s main dining room is like walking into the past. While the menu changes often, oatmeal pancakes are a favorite for breakfast and you’re certain to have a wide range of both surf and turf options for dinner. The fanciest dining option on the island, there’s a strict dress code. At the very least, men need slacks and a collared shirt; women should wear blouses, slacks or skirts. Jeans and tank tops are never permitted with shorts allowed only during breakfast.

Location: 500 Palm Ave

Hours of Operation: Breakfast served weekdays 7:30-9:30 am and weekends 7:30-10:30 am, Dinner is seasonal (call 941.964.4535 for schedule)

The Gasparilla Inn on Boca Grande

Pink Elephant

Now owned by the Gasparilla Inn, The Pink has two options for dinner: either the downstairs pub, which includes an outdoor patio, or the tad-fancier upstairs dining room. Despite the difference in ambiance and attire (island casual v. resort evening), the menus are the same (with the exception of the burger) and include a Japanese Rice Bowl that is outstanding.  The Hummer, a delicious combination of Mount Gay Rum Coffee Liquor and vanilla ice cream, remains the signature cocktail and all beverages come served with a tiny plastic pink elephant.

Location: 491 Bayou Ave, near the golf course

Hours of Operation: Monday – Thursday 5:30-9pm (dinner only), Friday – Sunday 11:30am-9:00pm (lunch & dinner), during the social season (December – April) its open 11:30am-9:00pm everyday

Breakfast

You have a few excellent choices when it comes to the most important meal of the day. Whether you want to grab-and-go or sit-and-stay, the island has just what you need:

The Inn Bakery

The first place open on the island, the bakery offers a plethora of caffeinated beverages, both hot and cold. It also boasts a wide variety of muffins, croissants and other baked goods including a coffee cake that is undeniably tasty. It is also a great spot for a quick lunch with a menu that includes quiche, salads and sandwiches, all available starting at 11am. A fan favorite is the chicken salad croissant.

Location: 384 E Railroad Ave, kitty corner from Loose Caboose

Hours of Operation: 6:30am-4:00pm daily during social season, 6:30am-2:00pm otherwise

Dolphin Cove

Home to Pink Pony ice cream but also a no frills breakfast. Opening at 7:30, everything on the menu, from huevos rancheros to pancakes or tamales costs a flat $7, making it one of the most affordable meals on the island. The restaurant also offers lunch, heavily focused on Mexican cuisine, and general convenience items for purchase.

Location: 471 Park Ave, next door to Hudson’s Grocery

Hours of Operation: 7:30am-4:00pm daily

The Pink Pony

The Outlet at the Innlet

Many locals claims The Outlet serve the best breakfast on the island. The menu includes omelettes, waffles, french toast and much more, with service starting at 7am. Located right along the water, you’re treated to tranquil views while enjoying their tasty dishes. The restaurant also serves lunch starting at 11, but doesn’t take reservations.

Location: 1251 12th Street East Boca Grande, just north of town

Hours of Operation: 7:00am-2:00pm daily

Don’t forget that the Inn also offers a daily breakfast, Scarpa’s opens during the week, and Third Street a weekend brunch.

Carry-Out Only

If you’re headed out on the boat or to the beach, you might consider a picnic lunch. There are a few establishments that provide just that- a more portable yet equally delicious meal.

Newlin’s

A health food store off the main drag that sells a plethora of nautical themed items, including salads to go. The lobster option is outstanding, albeit pricey. My family goes through a large container almost daily! You can also order their famous lobster roll, to be enjoyed either at home or the small table outfront.

Location: 446 4th St E, right next to the Lilly Pulitzer shop

Hours of Operation: Seasonal – call 941-964-2985 for hours

Hudson’s

The only grocery store in town, Hudson’s sells fresh seafood, if you’re interested in cooking at home, or ready-to-eat options like coleslaw or potato salad.

Location: 441 N. Park Avenue, on downtown’s main street

Hours of Operation: Monday – Saturday 8:00am – 5:00pm, closed Sundays

Desserts

Ice cream is a must have while visiting Boca Grande, both as a refreshing afternoon treat and because the island boasts two excellent parlors.

Pink Pony

Otherwise known as Dolphin Cove, it serves ice cream from the famous Big Olaf Creamery in Sarasota, Florida. With sixteen flavors- from Butter Pecan to Orange Pineapple , you’re bound to find the perfect option to satisfy your sweet tooth. Their Chocolate is a solid staple and either Trash Can or Cotton Candy their most unique.  The Pony also makes smoothies (for those looking to be healthier) and a cool frozen  yogurt treat for dogs.

The Loose Caboose

In addition to lunch, the Loose Caboose makes its own ice cream on premise. Available selections change daily depending on quantities made or consumed. Their Oreo (chocolate based rather than vanilla) is hands down the favorite, quite literally heaven in a cup. But it often runs out, sometimes within the day. Pop in regularly to see what’s on tap!

Hours of Operation: Daily 11:00am-4:30pm

With more than twice as many restaurants as it is miles long, when you plan a trip to Boca Grande, prepare to eat. No matter your group size, age, or dietary preferences, you’re certain to find just the right spot!
